The Department of Econometrics was established in 2009 as the seventh department of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Akdeniz University. It started admitting students to its undergraduate program in the academic year 2009-2010. Subsequently, graduate programs, including master's and doctoral programs, were introduced in the field of Econometrics.
About the Department
Econometrics, literally meaning "economic measurement," is concerned with the development and application of statistical and quantitative techniques to explain economic phenomena. Initially considered a sub-discipline of economics, econometrics, as a combination of economics, statistics, and mathematics, has evolved rapidly, and it is now widely accepted as an independent field of study. The primary aim of the Econometrics Department is to educate individuals capable of analyzing and solving existing economic problems using quantitative analysis techniques. Additionally, due to the similarities with other disciplines and the applicability of econometric methods to various fields, including social sciences, natural sciences, and health sciences, the Econometrics Department forms a common link within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and serves as a bridge between this faculty and many others.
Duration of Study and Main Courses
The duration of the undergraduate program in Econometrics is four years. While the curriculum covers courses commonly offered in economics departments, it places greater emphasis on subjects such as computer science, mathematics, and statistics to equip students with numerical analysis skills, independent research capabilities, and problem-solving abilities. The goal of the courses is to provide students with a general knowledge base and foster analytical and creative thinking.
Degrees and Careers of Graduates
Graduates from the Econometrics Department receive the title of "Econometrician." Thanks to their knowledge and skills in numerical disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, and econometrics, combined with their exposure to economics, finance, public administration, business, and some legal courses, they are capable of performing various numerical analyses required by the institutions and organizations they work for, as well as by public institutions engaged in economic and social studies. As a result, Econometrics Department graduates find employment opportunities in both public and private sectors, including all kinds of public and private institutions where graduates of other faculties of economics and administrative sciences are employed. Moreover, with their expertise in numerical evaluation techniques and critical thinking, Econometrics Department graduates are sought after in research and development (R&D), planning, and budget departments of public institutions like the State Institute of Statistics, State Planning Organization, Treasury, and Central Bank, as well as in various sectors such as insurance, banking, and capital markets. Additionally, they are eligible to work in public service positions, particularly in B-type civil service positions, based on their scores in the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS-3).
